# Set up a tracking domain

> Use a hostname on your own domain, such as links.yourcompany.com, for campaign click tracking. How to add it, the CNAME record, the verification statuses, and how to assign it to a mailbox.

## What a tracking domain is

When click tracking is on, EmailPal rewrites the links in your campaign emails so it can count clicks. Without a tracking domain those links use a shared EmailPal host. A tracking domain is a hostname on your own domain, like `links.yourcompany.com`, that the rewritten links use instead. They then look like yours, which protects delivery.

Click tracking only. EmailPal does not track opens. [Campaign analytics and click tracking](/help/campaign-analytics-and-click-tracking).

## Add one

1. Open the Engage workspace settings and find **Tracking domains**.
2. Type a **Hostname**, such as `links.yourcompany.com`, and choose **Add domain**.
3. Add the record shown under the hostname at your DNS provider. It is a **CNAME**. The **Name** is your hostname and the **Value** is the target EmailPal gives you.
4. Choose **Check now** under the hostname. EmailPal looks the record up and confirms the hostname answers over https. DNS can take up to a day to spread, so if it is not found yet, check again later.

You can add up to 5 tracking domains.

| Status | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| **Waiting for DNS** | The record has not been found yet. |
| **Verified** | DNS is set up. Tracked links can use this domain. |
| **Not verified** | The check failed. Look at the record. |

Until a domain shows **Verified**, link tracking keeps using the shared EmailPal host, so a half-finished setup never produces broken links.

## Choose it on each mailbox

A tracking domain does nothing until a mailbox uses it. Open the mailbox's sending settings, next to **Reply-to address** and **Minimum wait between sends**, and choose it under **Tracking domain**. Links in mail sent from that mailbox then use that domain.

## Remove one

Choose the bin icon next to the hostname.

## FAQs

### Do I need a tracking domain?

No. Without one, link tracking uses a shared EmailPal host. A tracking domain on your own domain is better for delivery. You can also turn **Track link clicks** off in a campaign.

### My tracking domain says Waiting for DNS

Check the CNAME at your DNS provider: the name is the full hostname you added, and the value is the target shown. If your provider has a proxy (an orange cloud), turn it off for this record. Allow up to a day, then choose **Check now** again.

### Can I have more than one?

Yes, up to 5. Each mailbox picks the one it uses.
